Bioseeds Australia is the product of two passionate farmers, David Thomson and Mark Lukies. Based in separate locations in Southern NSW and Northern Victoria, the farming duo were in search of a new and exciting crop for the discerning Aussie consumer. Their joint enthusiasm and hours of research led to the ancient super grain Camelina. With an interest in farming high quality food products the pair set about growing their first small crop in 2013. The success of this variety eventually led to a crushable size crop in early 2016.
Our Camelina crops are not genetically modified – the oil is extracted by cold pressing. We don’t use high temperatures and chemicals to extract the oil from the seeds, this ensures we are keeping and bottling all of the plant’s natural goodness.
Camelina oil is produced from the Camelina Sativa plant which is part of the mustard family and is an ancient grain. Camelina plant seeds contain 38 to 43% oil and 27 to 32% protein. Over 50% of the fatty acids in cold-pressed Camelina oil are polyunsaturated. The oil is also very rich innatural antioxidants, such as tocopherols, making this highly stable oil very resistant to oxidation and rancidity. It has 1–3% erucic acid.
