More about Tolpuddle Goats Cheese
At the end of 2013 Melissa and Donovan Jacka and their 2 children left inner city Melbourne in pursuit of a better way of living. They packed up and moved to Tarrawingee in North East Victoria to establish a small goat dairy and farmstead cheese factory.
On their 120 acre property in the Ovens Valley the family have restored a 1850s stone building for cheese production, cellar door tastings and sales. The building has a 35square metre ‘cheese cave’ in the cellar below with a private tasting table for small groups.
The backbone of Tolpuddle’s operation is a small herd of Saanen dairy goats. The goats are milked daily and the fresh milk is carried just a few paces across the garden to the cheese factory where it is pasteurised at 63 degrees and then used to make small-batches of specialist goat cheeses.
Tolpuddle produces a selection of hand-crafted cheeses, including their signature ‘Great Alpine Road’. Available seasonally are fresh goat milk, goat curd, chevre, ashed chevre, marinated gem, a semi hard Alpine-style cheese known as ‘Ned’ and other experimental varieties, including a chalky blue cheese called ‘Bulldog Blue’.
Tolpuddle goat cheeses are sold directly from the farm gate, and through select retailers in North East Victoria and Metropolitan Melbourne. They also feature on the menu in some of the best restaurants in North East Victoria.
“We invite you to come and visit us and experience for yourself how our farm operates. By opening the farm gate and sharing our story we know that customers will appreciate our ‘pasture to plate’ approach to cheese making, because that’s what makes our cheeses special!”
