This month – meet Valerie from Patisserie Valerie. Valerie makes handmade chocolates using Belgian couverture chocolate. Popular chocolate varieties she makes include the salted butter caramel, with her own favourite being an almond praline. Valerie sells ganache filled chocolates, pralines, truffles, chocolate coated honeycomb, chocolate coated orange and nuts, caramel coated apples and rocky road. Her chocolates are sold individually or in boxes at the Market every Saturday. Yummo!

We’re getting all mushy mushy over one of our fabulous stallholders, Shoalhaven Mushrooms, which has recently added another accolade to their name. This much-loved producer of mushrooms in many varieties – small, medium and large cups, flats and Swiss Browns – hails from Termeil in NSW, just north of Batemans Bay, and was established ten years ago by Gary Akers. We are pleased to announce that Shoalhaven Mushrooms is a finalist in the fresh food category of the Illawarra and South Coast Local Business Awards. They’ve promised they won’t keep us in the dark if they take out this prestigious award which will be announced at a special Gala Presentation Evening later this month. In the mean time you can come to the Market and buy their delicious, fresh mushrooms available each week. Good luck Shoalhaven Mushrooms!
Back by popular demand, the Sing Australia Canberra Blokes Group will be serenading Market-goers at a special performance on Saturday 14th July. Sing Australia is a national network of singing groups established in Canberra in 1985 with the aim of encouraging more Australians to sing. The Canberra Blokes Group is the only sole male group in the network and these guys will be singing their hearts to make your Saturday morning at the Market even more enjoyable.
Everyone’s favourite on-trend fruit, the avocado, is in season right now. Whether you enjoy yours smashed on toast, blended to a tasty guacamole, sliced in a salad or as an awesome sidekick to your seafood, the avocado is high in monounsaturated fats and rich in several B vitamins and vitamin K, vitamins C, E and potassium. And have you ever tried the custard apple? Also known as the sugar apple or sweetsop, the custard apple fruit is a native of the tropical Americas and West Indies. The flesh is fragrant and sweet, creamy white through to light yellow and resembles and tastes somewhat like custard. High in energy and an excellent source of Vitamin C, manganese, thiamine and B vitamins, you do need to be careful not to eat the custard apple seeds as they are toxic. Custard apples are fantastic used in desserts, sorbets, tarts and pies. Both avocados and custard apples are in season right now and available from at the Market from Burnbar Fruit. Hailing from Alstonville not far from Byron Bay on the north coast of NSW, Burnbar Fruit is a family owned orchard which believes in sustainability and environmentally friendly practices within their industry. You can find Burnbar, their avocados and custard apples at the Market fortnightly.
Do you love your gut? You really should. More and more recent research is proving a link between a healthy gut and a healthy body. Maureen Regan of Canberra knows the benefits of looking after the gut and wants to bring awareness of the link between good food and good health to as many people as she can. Her new business The Gut Shoppe Pty Ltd has arrived at the Market with a range of hand crafted fermented foods designed to care for the health of your gut. Foods Maureen produces include kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut, pickles and bone and (vegetarian) collagen broths. Come and meet Maureen, find out the benefits of these amazing foods and try them out for yourself. You’ll feel gutt-erly fantastic in no time!
Yes, they do. Straws really suck. Have you ever thought about the environmental impact each time you use a straw? It’s not pretty. And the Market is taking steps to reduce the use of straws along with other single-use plastic bags. Thankfully, there are only two stallholders currently using straws at the Market, and they’re on board with the ACTSmart campaign Straws suck which aims to help rid Canberra cafes and bars of plastic straws. Auddino’s Produce will move away from plastic straws by offering recyclable paper straws and encouraging customers to sip before they suck their slushies. Julie’s Juices have been drastically reducing the use of straws by asking each customer if they really need one as a way to get customers to think about the issue. Both businesses, together with the Market itself, have pledged to reduce plastic straws via the Straws Suck campaign. And the Market will now require all new Market applicants to use paper straws only, along with only bio-degradable cutlery and plates. When it comes to single-use plastic bags, the Market is encouraging customers to use alternatives such as the re-useable mesh produce bags which are available at five for $15 at the Rotary Club of Jerrabomberra marquee located by the office at the Market. Customers can also buy reusable Capital Region Farmers Market bags for $2 each at the Rotary Help Desk, AND if your bags break beyond repair, the Market will replace them for FREE. Win Win. This month – meet Rosie from Dom’s Woodfired Gourmet Bread. Rosie and Dom’s Woodfired Bread make lots of different varieties of freshly baked bread, including traditional Italian bread, crusty Italian bread, Pane di Casa, bread rolls, pizza bases, rye bread, spelt bread, and much much more.
Rosie and her team are located in Queanbeyan and have been attending the Capital Region Farmers Market for ten years! Be sure to pick up some of their famous spelt bread and delicious rye, which are two of their best sellers, next time you visit the Market.

Our new stallholder, Superbao, are the Market’s newest heroes. Their super fresh, super delicious, super authentic bao are the perfect treat for your Saturday morning shop.
Angel and Paul are Superbao’s creators. The pair both grew up in China with full hearts and a passion for delicious food. Their vision? That every bite of their bao can be a super moment.
‘We have faith in our food. Good food not only fill the stomach but also light up the day. That’s why we are persistent in hand making all steam buns to ensure the soft and fluffy texture,’ says Angel. ‘Our fillings are inspired by authentic local recipes from different countries and regions.’
So what flavours of bao do Superbao sell?
Pork Belly Bao, which is the most traditional and signature Bao EVER! Superbao’s pork belly is cooked in traditional Taiwan style and served with crushed peanuts, pickled cabbage and coriander leaves. The pork belly has been slow cooked for hours and is so soft that it melts in the mouth. The light sour flavour of traditionally pickled cabbage plays up the perfect balance in taste.
Shanghai Duck Bao. Their duck recipe comes from memories of mum’s home cooking. Stewed in soy sauce and Chinese spices, the duck absorbs all the flavours and retains the juicy moisture. When eating, squeezing a slice of orange on the duck will amplify the rich and decadent taste.
Crispy Fried Chicken Bao. Chicken thigh marinated overnight, coated with their secret flour recipe and deep fried. The outside is so crispy yet the chicken inside is juicy, tender, full of flavours. Drizzled with their saffron mayo sauce, this bao is gorgeous looking as well as tasting.
Panko Tofu Bao. Crumbed with panko flour, white and black sesame seeds, the fried tofu bao are popular choices for vegetarians.
The team aims to use as many local ingredients as possible, including pork belly from Boxgum and mushrooms from Gooda Creek.

It’s no secret that Jasper + Myrtle create some of the most sought-after chocolates in Canberra and beyond. That’s why it’ll come as no surprise that in May, the talented chocolatiers won 5 more international medals at the 2018 Academy of Chocolate Awards in London.
Jasper + Myrtle’s string of awards includes one silver award for their 72% Bougainville Classic Dark Drinking Chocolate, Bronzes for both their Rum Toddy, and Cinnamon + Spice Drinking Chocolate and a bronze for their Coconut and Ginger Dark Chocolate Bar. They also won a Bronze for their packaging.
The Academy of Chocolate is a worldwide competition for chocolate and has been running since 2005 in London. This year, the Academy had 1,200 entries from more than 45 countries, making Jasper + Myrtle’s multiple wins a big feat.

The capital is the place to be when it comes to truffle season, thanks to its terrific growing conditions. Otherwise known as tuber melanosporum (we won’t blame you if you have a bit of trouble with that one), truffles are ‘hunted’ for, and are found under the surface of the ground by trained dogs.
Truffles have a unique earthy, garlicky taste, and a deep aroma. They’re the perfect addition to risottos, pastas, even gelato… and you certainly can’t go past the appeal of truffle butter.
The place to get them? Family-run truffle farm, Terra Preta Truffles are the place to go to get the goods. Located just outside of Braidwood, Terra Preta supplies their high-grade French Black truffles to restaurants all around the world. Terra Preta will be at the Market every Saturday in winter offering these delectable delights.
