There’s something special about the comforting aroma of roasted chestnuts wafting through the air on a crisp winter morning. At the Market, you’ll find that simple pleasure every Saturday, thanks to Guy from Featherdale Chestnuts.
We recently sat down with Guy to learn more of the story behind these beautiful nuts, and why chestnuts are such a treasured winter treat.
Chestnuts have been part of Guy’s life for as long as he can remember. Together with his parents, Terry and Christine, he helped plant the very first trees on their property 40 years ago—he was just six years old at the time. Today, those same mature trees are still producing, alongside 400 new chestnut trees that have been planted to recover from the devastating 2020 fires.
Those fires were a true test of resilience. “We lost parts of our orchard, the family home and Mum’s gardens, the main shed and major infrastructure,” Guy recalls. But like all great farming stories, theirs is one of determination and regrowth.
When we asked Guy what he loves about his farming life, his answer was simple: “Everything!”
And what doesn’t he like? “Not a thing,” he laughs.
Guy’s favourite variety is the De Copi chestnut, and his go-to way to eat them is the most classic – roasted on the BBQ. Whether you’re new to chestnuts or a lifelong fan, there’s nothing quite like cracking open that warm shell and tasting their sweet, earthy flavour.
Selling directly at the Market isn’t just about business for Featherdale Chestnuts; it’s the heart of what makes their farm viable. “Selling to the shoppers of Capital Region Farmers Market is our main source of income. We wouldn’t be able to continue producing if we didn’t have this outlet. Selling through wholesale or major supermarkets is just not worth the farming.”
So next time you’re at the Market, stop by Featherdale Chestnuts to say hello to Guy, pick up a bag of fresh or roasted chestnuts, and taste this special winter treasure for yourself.
You can find Featherdale Chestnuts at the Markets every Saturday during chestnut season.
