It’s Truffle time!!

The black truffle is the second-most commercially valuable species and grows around the roots of oak and hazelnut trees. It’s the fruiting body of a subterranean fungus.   

Black truffles are harvested in late autumn and winter and at the market today we have locally grown truffles from Turalla Truffles in Bungendore.

Truffles are used in many recipes including truffle butter, oil, chocolates and even on the good old scrambled eggs for brekkie!!

Rhubarb – Who doesn’t love rhubarb crumble???

It’s a perennial vegetable, although it is generally used as a fruit in desserts, jams, pies and crumbles. Rhubarb is easy to grow, but needs cool weather to thrive, so perfect for winter.

You only eat the stalks, which have a rich tart flavour – the leaves of this plant are poisonous, so be sure that they are not ingested.

Fresh Turmeric – Grown locally by Stikkie Bikkie is a perennial herbaceous plant growing to about 1 meter tall. 

Can be used fresh like ginger or more commonly as a dried spice particularly popular in Asian and Indian cooking – ideal for curries, curry pastes and is sometimes used to colour rice.

Other uses include teas and has several medical benefits including Anti- inflammatory properties, cholesterol lowering and also assists in battling colds, flu, etc…perfect for winter!

Lady William Apple – is the latest apple to ripen, in mid to late June. It was discovered growing in an orchard in Donnybrook, Western Australia in 1935 and Mr Williams named it after his lovely wife.

It is a cross between the Granny Smith apple and the old Victorian Rokewood apple. It needs a good hot summer to grow well and fully mature. It is sharp and tangy to eat and will store well over winter and is grown locally close to Canberra by Loriendale Orchards one of our Organic producers.

Also, the Lady William was crossed with the Golden Delicious apple by Dr Crisps in the early 1970s at the main WA Apple Research Station, this resulted in the Pink Lady and Sundowner apples that are now so popular.
