A Very Cherry Market – Saturday 23rd November 2024

Capital Region Farmers Market is THE place to buy the best and freshest cherries from the Canberra region – not only to these beauties look lovely, they’re plump, juicy, fresh and come direct form the growers. We just love our cherries, and we know our customers do too! 

That’s why this year we’re celebrating the fabulous cherry with a special theme day – A Very Cherry Market.  

Taking place on Saturday 23rd November 2024, A Very Cherry Market will highlight our region’s dedicated cherry growers and all the delicious cherry products they bring with them to Market including cherry jams, sauces and mouth-watering baked goods.  

What you’ll find at A Very Cherry Market: 

  • Tasting and buying cherry themed treats from our makers and producers.  
  • Spitting! Yes spitting cherry pips! Kids are invited to participate in our fun pip-spitting competition to see who can get their cherry pip the furthest, with prizes up for grabs. The competition will run from 9-11am.  Please see the full details and rules below.
  • The chance to win from the Market Cherry-go-round – grab a ticket from the Market entry points for your chance to win a box of cherries given away to one lucky shopper every hour. There will be four boxes of cherries given away throughout the morning – one each at 8am, 9am, 10am and 11am.

The Cherry Pip Spitting Competition: An Unconventional Tradition

A Delightful Blend of Fun, Skill, and Tradition

The Cherry Pip Spitting Competition, often heralded as one of the most whimsical and unique events, draws participants and spectators from all walks of life. This unusual yet fascinating contest combines elements of skill, fun, and tradition, making it a much-anticipated event in various parts of the world.

The Rules of the Game

Despite its seemingly simple nature, the Cherry Pip Spitting Competition has a set of rules that participants must follow. These rules ensure fairness and add a layer of seriousness to the otherwise light-hearted event.

Basic Rules

  • Ages   6-17yo only
  • An adult must be present with all children under 12 years.
  • No age groupings
  • Each participant is given a cherry to chew and then to spit the pip.
  • Risks:  As with everything there are risks involved, greatest risk is choking.

If your child CANNOT eat a cherry while the pip is insitu, it is a sure sign, they should not be partaking in this competition.

  • The pip must be spat from a designated spot, usually marked by a line on the ground.
  • Participants may not use any aids, such as straws or blowpipes, to spit the pip.
  • The distance the pip travels is measured from the starting line to the point where the pip lands.
  • In case of a tie, additional rounds may be held to determine the winner.

World Records

The current world record for the longest cherry pip spit stands at an impressive 93 feet and 6.5 inches, set by Brian “Young Gun” Krause in 2004. This remarkable feat showcases the level of skill and dedication required to excel in this quirky sport

Starting time is  9.00am  and finishes at 11.00am.
