What’s in season – Potatoes

Winter is well and truly here, and there’s no better time to celebrate one of the most comforting and versatile ingredients around – the humble potato. Right now, the Market is brimming with freshly harvested spuds, and whether you like them roasted, mashed, baked or turned into soup, there’s a variety perfect for every dish.

At the Market this season, you’ll find some of the tastiest local varieties, including Dutch Cream, King Edward, Sebago and Nicola. Each brings something different to the table, and knowing the difference can help you get the most out of your cooking.

Dutch Cream potatoes are rich, buttery and have a beautifully creamy texture. They’re ideal for mash or anything that needs a smooth, velvety finish. They also hold up well in a potato bake, bringing that golden, indulgent feel.

King Edward potatoes are a long-time favourite when it comes to roast dinners. They have a fluffy interior that crisps up perfectly in the oven, making them the go-to for golden roast potatoes. Toss them in olive oil with a sprinkle of rosemary and you’re sorted for Sunday lunch.

Sebago potatoes are the all-rounders of the potato world. With their white skin and versatile texture, they’re great for chipping, baking, boiling or mashing. If you’re making a batch of wedges, classic mash or even a shepherd’s pie, this is the variety to reach for.

Nicola potatoes are waxy with a slightly sweet flavour and hold their shape well when cooked. They’re particularly good in salads, soups and casseroles.

Our stallholders consistently bring the freshest, in-season produce to the Market, and while these four are the main varieties you’ll find right now, you might also come across some more unusual or rare types from time to time. These lesser-known varieties are always worth a try, and can add something new to your winter cooking. One of the best parts about shopping at the Market is the chance to chat directly with the growers. If you’re ever unsure which potato is best for your dish, our knowledgeable stallholders are always happy to offer expert tips and advice to help you make the right choice.

Looking for some potato inspiration?

The best thing about potatoes is just how many ways you can enjoy them. From simple sides to show-stopping mains, they’re endlessly adaptable and always satisfying. In winter, they truly shine as the hero of the dinner table. A warm bowl of potato and leek soup is hard to beat on a chilly evening. For something a little more indulgent, a layered potato gratin is a perfect way to level up any meal. If you’re feeling adventurous in the kitchen, why not try your hand at homemade gnocchi? Dutch Cream potatoes work beautifully for this – their buttery texture creates soft, pillowy bites that pair perfectly with a sage butter or rich tomato sauce. You can even go a little rustic with chunky potato wedges or lean into nostalgia with a classic potato bake.

If you’re looking to pick up some top-quality spuds at the Market, you’re in luck.
