What’s in Season – Asparagus

We love spring at the Market. The turn of the season sees an influx of in-season produce that we couldn’t wait to get our hands on during the chilly Canberra winter. One of the most coveted and well-known spring vegetables in Australia is none other than the asparagus. Known for its complex flavour, asparagus is a healthy and delicious addition to any plate.

Asparagus has been consumed by humans for over 2,000 years and finds its origins in eastern Mediterranean countries. Asparagus was also believed to have medicinal qualities, with the ancient Greeks and Romans using crushed asparagus to treat bee stings and toothaches. With its unique properties and intriguing texture and shape, asparagus is extremely versatile and can be prepared in a variety of ways. Grilled, pan-roasted, blanched, steamed, or roasted – there are no limits to how asparagus can be enjoyed.

Asparagus has some great health benefits, and it is a straightforward way to pack your plate full of nutrients. Asparagus is a diuretic, meaning the minerals and amino acids within the vegetable help protect your body from toxins. Additionally, asparagus contains a variety of antioxidants and a high level of potassium.

The plant itself has quite an interesting growth and production process. Asparagus plants develop slowly, and a producer may have to wait 3-5 years before they begin to see fully grown produce ready to harvest. Once the asparagus plant comes into development and is ready to be harvested, the peak season is noticeably short and lasts only 6-8 weeks (about 2 months).

As the asparagus season is so short, it’s important to make the most of the time and head to Market to see what our producers have to offer! Market stallholders Armanini Produce return for the first time in three years with their freshly harvested asparagus crop grown in Yoogali, NSW. One of our original stallholders John and Dora Andonaros will also be returning this week with their asparagus from Googong and Cowra. Take a trip to the Market to chat all things asparagus with our producers and pick up a bundle or two.
