What’s in Season: Citrus

It’s that time of year when eating comfort foods and staying inside becomes all too easy, and we can sometimes be more vulnerable to colds and flus. Luckily for us, many citrus fruits ripen in winter, just when we need their vitamin C hit the most.

In Australia, citrus growers offer deliciously zesty fruit varieties from winter through to summer, but some varieties have longer seasons than others.

At our Market, blood oranges have been one of the most popular products in recent weeks. Blood oranges are famous for their rich, crimson-coloured flesh, which is caused by the presence of anthocyanins – a family of polyphenol pigments that are common in many flowers and fruits, but are rare in citrus fruit varieties.

Blood oranges, as well as other citrus fruits, are rich in antioxidants which are helpful in reducing the stress on your body caused by oxidation, and lower your risk of developing some chronic health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. They’re also packed full of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and other healthy nutrients.

Some of the stallholders from the Market who offer citrus products are Auddino’s Produce and Warrick Morris – Fruit & Veg.

For years, Auddino’s has been offering high-quality home-grown vegetables as well as a wide range of citrus fruit. All their citrus fruits are grown in Wamoon, not far from their home base in Leeton, in regional NSW. They also offer fruit juices that are prepared within hours of their fruit being harvested, with orange, lemon, and grapefruit juices all currently available.

Warrick Morris are also based in Leeton, literally right across the road from Auddino’s, offering a selection of in-season citrus including four mandarin and orange varieties, and lemons.

While you’re here at the Market on Saturday, don’t forget to grab an invigorating freshly-made citrus juice from Julie’s Juice.
