Rabbit stew anyone? – March 2013

This month we would like to welcome Mark Dureau to the Market. Mark will be visiting fortnightly with his wild game rabbits – and boy are we looking forward to trying them. Mark lives and operates out of Hillston, about 110km north-west of Griffith. He has been involved in the rabbit hunting industry for about 5 years, the last three as a full-time professional.

Mark has about 15 properties that he shoots on, varying in size from approx 5,000HA to 75,000 HA.  Mark is able to control the number of rabbits in the area, assisting local producers and farmers as a result. Wondering what to do with your wild game rabbit? Rabbits are high in protein and are great for autumn stews or in the Crockpot. They also make a great base for curries, casseroles or even pasta dishes.

‘Tis the season for fresh autumn produce (and chocolate!) – March 2013

This month we’re welcoming some old favourites back to the Market including some wonderful fresh autumn produce. We’ll soon start seeing figs, almonds, walnuts, borlotti beans, leaks, passionfruit and several varieties of grapes – perfect for your autumn cooking.  We also expect to be welcoming back nashi pears from Clearview Organics – delish!

It is also that time of year where we can unashamedly consume an obscene amount of chocolate and not feel guilty. Yes, it’s Easter. But don’t settle for store-bought bites this year.  Instead why not pick up some locally produced organic chocolate delights from the Market this Saturday from Lindsay and Edmunds?

Meet some new meat makers– February 2013

Get some pork on your fork, and some beef as well, with the delicious offerings from Boxgum Grazing — a new member of the Capital Region Farmers Market stallholder family.

Boxgum Grazing is a family owned farming business based near Young.  They are passionate about producing high quality affordable food — including free range pork and grass fed beef — within a beautiful and productive rural landscape.  In addition to their products of the culinary kind, they also offer farm stay accommodation in a picture-perfect setting.  Be sure to visit Boxgum Grazing next time you’re at the Market.

ACTSmart and be waste wise – February 2013

Customers and stallholders can now ‘do the right thing’ when it comes to recycling, thanks to the new and improved waste management system for the Farmers Market.

Launched on 2 February 2013 in conjunction with the ACT Government and its ACTSmart Business Recycling Program, the new recycling bins will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, and is part of the Market’s ongoing commitment to the environment.

In addition to general waste and recycling bins, there will also be organic waste bins, with any organic waste from stallholders to be put towards other Rotary Club of Hall projects (as mulch or compost, for example).

Like Canberra? Like the Farmers Market! – February 2013

In conjunction with Canberra’s Centenary celebrations, the Like Canberra campaign last year asked Canberrans to nominate the things they like best about their nation’s capital.  Almost 14,000 entries were received, and we think it’s no surprise that the Farmers Market has been included in this list of wonderful things to see and do.

Voting is now open to determine the top 100 things Canberrans like about Canberra.  These will be revealed in March 2013, and will be displayed on a commemorative poster.

So if you give the EPIC Farmers Market a big thumbs up, then be sure to do so on the Like Canberra website and place your vote. Voting closes 28 February 2013.
