There are hundreds of varieties of figs across the globe, and although they’re mainly known to come from the Middle East and western Asia, here in Australia we have 45 native fig species, all producing edible fruit. One of our newest stallholders, Glenn from Yenda Figs, has been growing fruit and vegetables for the last 10 years.
At the Market, we’re very lucky to be able to offer fresh tomatoes year-round due to some of our producers who have hydroponic and green house set ups. But in February (weather permitting!), marketgoers can experience the rich flavours of naturally grown varieties, in particular heirloom species.
Christmas is almost upon us again, and with the closing of the year, ‘tis the season for family, friends, and festive food. One thing that you can guarantee every Christmas is that there will be fresh and in season produce readily available at the Capital Region Farmers Market.
You know we’re getting close to summer in Canberra when you start seeing delicious in-season cherries at the Market. Visions come to mind of sticky red fingers and lips, impossibly large collections of cherry stalks, and children challenging each other to seed-spitting competitions.
