What’s in Season – Apples

From the crisp crunch of a freshly picked sweet Gala, to the juicy tang of a Granny Smith, there’s nothing quite like biting into a locally grown apple. Apples are a classic snack loved by all throughout history. Their perfect pocket-sized dimensions make them ideal for snacking on anywhere, as they can easily be taken with you anywhere you go.

Australia is home to around 11 different varieties of apples that are commonly produced, including Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady, Red Delicious, and Jonathan. Each type boasts a unique crunch, taste and colour, making them a popular and endlessly fascinating fruit. The diversity of apples is truly remarkable, making them a beloved and endlessly intriguing part of Australia’s agricultural landscape.

Apples may be sweet and delicious, but they’re also a healthy treat too. Apples are packed with antioxidants, as well as both soluble and insoluble fibres such as pectin. This special fibre acts as a prebiotic and helps to nourish the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which in turn, supports overall digestive health.

Apples are a beloved ingredient in many dishes and are commonly found in a variety of baked goods. Of all these dishes, however, none are more cherished than the world-famous apple pie. While each apple pie recipe passed down through the generations may have its own unique twist, one thing that remains constant is the need for fresh, juicy, and delicious apples. And what better place to source your produce than from our incredible apple producers at the Market?

We have an amazing range of apples at the Market this season, but we are seeing Gala in predominance.
